Demons

I stood at the door and watched you bare your teeth. We were at the beginning, at the end, or somewhere in between. There were knives at the foot of our bed. We were at the point where love no longer meant love, but something more malignant. At the height of it all, my balance failed. I fell at the speed of a diving bell. Your waves consumed me at depths unknown to man. I swam in crooked circles at the bottom of the black. My lungs learned to process salt, sand, and simple promises you could never keep. I looked at you and saw the man I always feared. Carve away at him with sharpened bone and steel. He is the beast at our door.

Rebecca Ligon received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Akron in Spring 2013. Her poetry has appeared in Catfish Creek and is forthcoming in The Quaker. She is moving on as a poetry student in the Northeast Ohio Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program and a graduate assistant at the University of Akron.
