MEETING MY HOST FATHER
My father’s eyes
are red perpetually.
The missionary who drops
me off says, He looks drunk
but don’t worry!
This man is a stranger
and I wonder if I
should be locking
my doors at night.
All the men here drink, this
is normal I’m told.
But why? What makes
this normal?
My father asks
what TV I watch,
I name every well-known
anime I can think of.
He nods and says,
I once saw the American
Dragonball movie,
and I was saddened.
If my Japanese
were better, I would say,
I was saddened, too.
